School Program Information:
Keeping Kids Drug Free
Interactive presentations complement drug education programs in Peel Region schools and are consistent with the curriculum requirements of The Ministry of Education.
Students in each grade receive a different presentation with age appropriate techniques and resources to help students learn about drugs and making informed choices.
Grades JK-2 learn ways to stay safe, about safe use of medicines and the dangers of tobacco through a 30-minute presentation and videos.
Grades 3-5 learn about medicines, the harmful effects of smoking and alcohol, dealing with peer pressure and saying No through a 45-60 minute discussion including videos and follow-up activities.
Grades 6-8 learn about the harmful effects of tobacco, alcohol, illegal drugs and peer pressure through a 45-60 minute discussion that includes slides or video, a drug board and follow-up activities. A workshop on Choices and Consequences is an additional option for Grades 7 and Grades 8.
High School students learn about the harmful effects of illegal drugs, tobacco, alcohol and consequences of drug use as well as making choices through a 75-90 minute discussion with slides and a drug board.
Free resources and teaching materials, including The Drug Education Handbook, are provided to all teachers whose class participates.
The cost is $1.00 per student or a minimum of $25.00 per school.
Schools pay for presentations in different ways...some use funds from the school's budget, while others receive generous support from their School Councils, collect payment from students or hold a special pizza or hot dog day.
Presentations to School Councils and parent groups help equip parents with information and strategies to assist them in Raising Drug-Free Children. Parents learn what current drugs and drug paraphernalia look like and discuss ways to help children deal with factors that influence drug use. The cost of a 1.5 hour presentation is $150.00. Further information can be found at Raising Drug-Free Children.
